The Rocky Journey with My Host Family... Part 2/2

Lack of communication

Some days I would wake up in the caravan to find that the whole family had left with the car and I thought that they had left me stranded in the middle of nowhere because no one told me that they were 1) leaving and 2) where they were going! Turns out they had went to a village in the mountain but they were gone for hours and I was panicking because I didn't even have service to call anyone!

After arguing against going to the campsite every week, they weren't happy, saying that they didn't trust me in the house alone and that it was 'tradition' as their previous au pairs went with them. One week, I didn't realise they were going to the campsite as no one had mentioned it all week so I thought everything would be dandy and I had already made plans to meet my best friend and her mum and sister who had come to visit her for the weekend.

On that Friday when the parents came home from work, which is when they start packing to leave later in the night, they asked me why I hadn't packed a bag yet. I told them I wasn't going as I already had plans and they were not a fan of that and still tried to get me to pack. However, I said that her mum had brought over medicine that I needed from home that my mum had given her and I needed it urgently so she let me off (I was actually suffering really badly over there with heavy nose bleeds for hours a day and a severe skin problem that we couldn't determine the cause of).

No Goodbyes

On my final day of working on Friday 17th August, I woke up to get ready before working. Whilst I was in the bathroom, the parents told me they were taking the kids to the doctors because something was wrong (I still have no idea what happened). So, I went back to bed for a while until they would come back and I could start work. I waited hours and hours and still no one had texted me saying they were coming back. It was almost time for me to leave the house as my stay with them was over. They then texted me saying they wouldn't be back as they had to go to the hospital.

I felt helpless because I had no idea what had happened to the kids that I had looked after for 2 months and grown attached to, and this also meant I couldn't say a goodbye to them as I had to leave the house for good that afternoon. I sent them a message saying that I hope the kids were okay and thanked them for the great summer that I had with them (despite the clashes) but it just felt weird not doing it in person, especially because I became a part of the kids' lives that summer. They didn't really send me a proper goodbye message back which was quite upsetting, but I just had to get over it and enjoy my last weekend in the city when my best friend flew in to visit me before going back to Glasgow.
